Newtownards – Walking Guide

Newtownards (Ards) is one of Ards and North Down Borough’s biggest and bustling towns. The old market town has retained a reputation for good shopping which continues to attract people from far and wide. What it has to offer goes far beyond the hustle and bustle – to simply see the town as the gateway to other parts of the Borough, is to miss out!

One of the most recognisable symbols of Newtownards is Scrabo Tower. For local people, first sight of the tower means they’re home, for visitors, it means they’ve reached the Ards Peninsula and Newtownards. The landmark tower is clearly visible on any approach to the town. It stands on a hill at the centre of Scrabo Country Park, offering panoramic views over Newtownards, Strangford Lough and beyond.

Ards is also home to more crafts people and artists than anywhere else in Northern Ireland, so its no surprise to find a shop like Ards Crafts in the town, which acts as a showcase for the work of local craftspeople. Nor is it surprising that the town also has a thriving Arts Centre. The centre has two galleries which regularly exhibit work by local and national artists, and an extensive performance programme covering everything from theatre to contemporary and classical music.
